When it comes to water supply for your home, there are basically two choices. You can receive water from a municipal supply or you can use a well. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, over 43 million people in the U.S. use well water daily. The well pump is an integral part of the water well system. Let’s look at how a well pump works.
The well pump is a device that draws the water from inside a well. The water is then pushed or pulled into a well storage tank. These devices can be installed in the home, an outbuilding, or in the well itself. The well pump must be maintained like other aspects of the well. There are three main types of pumps. The types are submersible, jet, and centrifugal.
Well pumps often work one of two ways. In some instances, the pump will push water up a pipe or use a suction to pull the water from underground. The pump is activated by a well pressure switch. This is a device that sends a signal to the pump when the water pressure inside a well pressure tank is too high or too low. This lets the pump run as little as possible. The well pump’s lifespan can be increased this way. If the pressure in the tank becomes low, then the pump will activate to fill the tank. When the tank reaches the pre-set pressure after filling up, the pump will be signaled to turn off again. This helps the pump run more efficiently over its life.
Deciding whether you will get your water supply from a municipal supply or a well is a personal choice. The decision can be based on a few different factors. You may wish to have a well simply because you want unprocessed water. Well water often tastes better to many people, and it hasn't been treated in any way. Also, you may need to choose a well if you don’t have easy access to a municipal water supply.
